Up for Sale: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ Private Estate

Boston & New England  + Massachusetts  + Weekender  |

The late Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ private estate, Red Gate Farm, is on the market, with an asking price of $65 million. The 340-acre property is in Aquinna, MA, on Martha’s Vineyard, and includes a 6,456-square-foot main residence, a two-story guest house, two garages, a caretaker’s house, boat house, storage building and hunting cabin. Also included in the price is more than a mile of an Atlantic Ocean view.

Onassis acquired the property, a former sheep farm, in 1979.  At the time, it had just one structure, which was the above-mentioned hunting cabin. The main house was completed in 1981. Caroline Kennedy, Onassis’ daughter, commissioned Yale School of Architecture’s Deborah Burke to expand the main residence.

Christie’s International Real Estate, represented by Tom LeClair and Gery Conover with affiliate Land Vest, are handling the marketing of the property.

According to Caroline Kennedy, Red Gate Farm represented Onassis’ “expression of her romantic and adventurous spirit.” The property meant Onassis could be close to nature, family and her books, Kennedy said, even building a fairy treehouse for her grandchildren. As the grandchildren are grown, “it is time for us to follow my mother’s example, and create our own worlds,” Kennedy said.

While Red Gate carries fond memories for the family, there are also darker chapters involved with the property. When John F. Kennedy Jr.’s plane went down in July 1999 (carrying wife, Carolyn and sister-in-law Lauren), the wreckage washed ashore within a mile of Red Gate Farm.
